When we think of Degas, we think of dancers: graceful, beautiful, elegant, and soft. But Degas himself was anything but soft. He hated the term "impressionism" and openly mocked his friends who painted outdoors. He was anti-semitic and misogynistic, which led to many estranged friendships. Renoir once said, "What a creature he was, that Degas! All his friends had to leave him; I was one of the last to go, but even I couldn't stay till the end."
