The Velazquez scene features a group of men making weapons for war when Apollo appears with a message. Here, Apollo is replaced by a Kabuki actor from 18th century Japan who, as the book tells us, appears to be "[facing] the necessity for a determined decision." The blacksmiths look on in shock.
