From a young age, Infanta Margarita Teresa was intented to marry the future emperor (and her maternal uncle/paternal cousin...), Leopold I of the Hapsburg family. This portrait was comissioned by her father, King Philip IV of Spain when she was only 2 or 3 years old so that he could send it to her future husband to show him what she looked like. By 15, she was married to Leopold, with whom she had 6 pregnancies, 4 births, and 1 surviving child. She died at age 21 from complications from her 7th pregnancy in 6 years.
